Public Relations for Water Conservation
The only way to get people to conserve water is to alert them of the crisis and explain it to them and then you must back it up with a really strong public relations program, which fosters goodwill in the community. Unfortunately one problem with public relations campaigns for water conservation is that as the citizens save more water the price of their water goes up.
This is because the water companies have a fixed set of costs and that is divided by the amount of water used. When less water is used the price per unit of water goes up and therefore the people who have been saving and conserving water are very upset. Here they have been saving water and their prices are increasing and therefore there is no financial incentive to get them to use less water.
This is something that has plagued many public relations campaigns for water conservation. Another problem is that as a community moves from level two drought to level 3 drought restrictions the citizens are once again punished in that they may not be able to wash their cars or water their lawns and yet they have been saving water and might have decreased the total city water usage by 15 or 20%.
It is at these times that a good public relations campaign program needs to consider these issues and work extremely hard to overcome the animosity by those that are working so hard to conserve the water. The best way to overcome this is constant communication and good publicity through excellence in public relations. Please consider all this in 2006.
