Marketing with Social Networking Sites

The newest wave of marketing your product online is with social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, and Skype. This type of advertising consists of setting up a profile, making \"friends\", and keeping contact with those \"friends\" while discreetly marketing your site. Many people think of these sites as free advertising.

There are millions of users on these sites and it may seem like a pool of potential clients. If you are new to these sites, you should use caution when trying to market your product or service. To be clear, social networking sites are not intended to be free advertising. They actually sell advertising so if they see a profile simply being used to market something, they are likely to ban the profile. This could be detrimental for any potential sales. Purchasing advertising is a definite option but you should be aware that because of the massive appeal of the social networking site, rates will be quite hefty.

The key to using a social networking site to market your product or service is to market yourself instead. This is a new concept that is catching on and is very effective for capturing leads. Instead of selling the product, use the profile to tell about yourself. For example, \"My name is Jane Doe and I am a stay at home mom. I earn a wonderful salary simply by working a few hours a day from my home office. I am involved in internet marketing and have been quite successful.\" Leaving the profile simple yet intriguing will create inquiries. People in your \"friends\" list will begin to ask questions like, \"What exactly do you do? Can you send me some information?\" These are the type of leads you should be following. These are individuals who already have an interest and just need to be sold. From that point you can direct them to your website or blog and then they can become a sale.

You should also be aware that the majority of users of the social networking sites are minors or under the age of 30. Any product or service that you offer that is inappropriate for younger demographics would not be successful on these sites. For example if you are promoting a retirement product, life insurance, etc. chances are you will not make a single sale. Make sure you market appropriately.

Keep in contact with your \"friends\" with comments, messages, blogs, and bulletins. This creates more appeal and interest in you. If you can get potentials interested in you, from that point you can sell your product.
