How to Write a Press Release
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? This rhetorical question that has provoked thought for many years applies nicely to the quest for publicity. The first step to getting publicity is announcing yourself, or making the tree fall, and a professional and affordable way of asking the world for attention is the press release.
With the rise of the internet, press releases have become even more useful than they used to be. The internet provides a colossal means of distribution that goes beyond the press releases of the old days that were seen by media professionals who monitored newswires. Now, in addition to newswire services, press releases can be distributed online and be read by anybody that might be searching for the information that the release contains.
Many business people, even authors, often overlook the possibilities of writing a press release, but it is a formulaic document that most competent people can produce by following a guideline. Like any basic news article a press release should answer these questions: Who? What? Where? When? How? and sometimes Why? A good way to approach writing a press release is to write down these questions and fill in the answers. Then, all the necessary information has been mapped out and can be more easily combined into a professional quality press release.
The most essential element of a press release is what is called the news element. The release needs to be announcing something that can be considered newsworthy. Examples of a newsworthy event would be receiving an award, publishing a book, starting a business, or expanding a business. It is important that the main subject of the press release be interesting and timely.
After writing a press release many options exist for distributing it. The document can be sent to local media outlets, posted at your website, and distributed on the internet. Many companies specialize in distributing press releases on the internet for affordable rates and sometimes even for free.
A press release on the internet will increase the number of people learning about your message. Another plus with the internet press release is that they can contain your website address and thereby produce traffic to your website. This makes the press release a very useful and versatile document because not only does it have the potential of generating media coverage but at a minimum it sends readers to your website.
