The Power of Social Networking

If you are a frequent Internet user, most likely you are part of an online social network group. Be it Friendster, LinkedIn, MySpace or any other sites, there bound to be someone who has invited you to join their social network.

Other than participating in discussion, photo and video sharing, looking for partner and other mundane stuffs, how can you bring out the potential of your social network to the fullest to help you in your Internet business?

First, let take a look at the benefits of an online social network

  1. It establishes your Web reputation
    \r We all know that a persons reputation is more important than any other things in the World. By requesting testimonials from your clients, friends, colleagues, you are adding credential to yourself. With great credential, you can look for a better job (LinkedIn), find a partner easier (Friendster) or even attract more customers to buy your product.

  3. Get connected to a bigger network instantly
    \r Just imagine: you have 10 friends in your network. Each of them has 10 other friends in their networks and each of their 10 friends has 10 other friends and so on. Now, by just getting 10 friends to your network, you are increasing your visibility to 100, 1000, 10,000 or even more. What other ways allow you to increase your exposure like this without any cost? This also explains why Network Marketing model is so successful. This is known as the power of Leverage.

Adding value to your network

A social network by itself has no value until you add value to it. You can do it by the following ways:

Be involved and express interest in other people
\r The best way you can market yourself is to be involved in other peoples life. Read their blog and leave positive comments. Take part in discussion and give useful advices. If you are truly impressed by a piece of work, article, photo or video clip, try sending the author an email to tell them how much you love it. I am sure they will be delighted. The more you give, the more you gain.

Do not hard sell your product
\r If you are running an Internet business, do not promote your product openly and aggressively. You will be blacklisted. What you can do is to write about your business, product and website in your profile. Then attract as many people to read your profile as possible. This can be achieved by expressing interest in other peoples work. As long as you are interested in other people, they will be interested in you too.

Be an asset, not a liability
\r Make yourself useful in the social network. Do not spam or talk negatively about others. Be an expert in your field and someone who others can look to when they need advice. Be an asset to your network, not a liability.

Social networking is a skill where everyone can master. It is not something that you can build overnight, but it is definitely something valuable over the long run. If you put in the effort to be a great social networker, I am sure that your reputation will increase and your Internet business will soar.

Revving Up Your Web Logs

With the advent of technology, people have discovered new ways on how they can be able to communicate and air their sentiments to people who are most likely sharing the similar interest and sentiments. This is thru the use of the social networking sites. These social networking sites do not only allow people to speak out their insights and ideas but it also allows them to make new friends all over the world; and find ways on how they can communicate with their relatives and friends that is usually being done thru snail mail several decades ago. With these sites, too, like Friendster.com, MySpace.com, and Mutliply.com, people are given ways on how they can find their old friend whom they have lost contact to. Now, focusing on developing web logs or blogs as they usually term it, the following insights can help:

Make an interesting web log content. The way web loggers are able to generate followers on their web logs is due to the fact that they are able to create a far interesting web log content that people love to read. It is essential therefore that you come up with blogs that will arouse the interest of other people.

Make as many web logs as you can. The more web logs you come up, the more possible it is for you to generate more followers. Just make sure that in every web log you create, a diverse topic or subject is being injected on it, to promote dynamism in content.

Embed, in certain occurrence, some graphical and visual effects. People who visit other peoples web logs are far interested to see graphical animations on other web logs. This is one way of revving up your web log to make it a little more interesting to other people.

Viral Selling and New Social Media Marketing

Alli, the new over-the-counter brand of prescription drug Xenical from Glaxo-SmithKline, is being marketed by a new mix of messages. Their marketers understand both the emergence and importance of social networking as a new media marketing tool, as evidenced in their latest commercial. They get it. They are now able to grasp the concept of social media networking as a tool for viral marketing. What is particularly interesting, is that neither of these terms were even a part of general marketing vocabulary and strategic thinking until just recently.

Marketers employed by the pharmaceutical giant have created a huge buzz surrounding this new product addressing a huge and hungry market; No puns intended! Their latest ad clearly displays the power of word-of-mouth viral marketing. It displays people conversing via email and phone extolling the benefits of this new product. The ad then begins to accelerate the layering of these images so that we can more easily perceive the word-of-mouth methodology and viral growth of their message. It works; Their message connects with us and they understand it.

These social networking site lists will continue to grow and change over time. One thing is certain, as is proven with the current political drama unfolding in cyberspace: Marketing and the timely dissemination of relevant information has evolved beyond anything previously available or conceivable and will continue to develop. Social networking is now viewed as a legitimate means of strategic marketing.

What Is A Blog or Social Network Really?

The connectability and reaching out for new and unique social settings and situations have spawned an influx of interesting and viable resources for information sharing and socialization. The social network scenario has come to a momentous explosion, with every viable type of interest, hobby, business, and group represented. The socialization and searchability of the Internet, (thanks in a major way to Google) has become fun, entertaining, informative, and interactive.

People from every walk of life are exchanging knowledge and information. They are having fun in the process with the different forums for social networking. The games, chats, groups, networks, and topics are limitless.

The definition of a blog is really just an online diary of sorts, a shared journal of whatever the author finds interesting and worthy of sharing. The postings usually sit in chronological order or reverse chronological order. Typically updated daily or weekly, the blog entries reflect a particular topic, the personality of the author, and possibly what they are passionate about.

A blog is a social network in itself, maybe far removed from your contacts more so than a static website oriented toward a group gathering, but still a social network of blogs and bloggers in itself.

Now, a social network includes sometimes a sub set of blogs, hosted on the social network site, blogger groups, and then a variety of other groups, networks, people, topics, graphics, profiles, and fun.

A Social Network is defined as any website that allows multiple users to publish content themselves. The information may be on any subject and seen by potential friends, mates, group members, employers, or employees.

Creation of your profile at various social network sites is your stamp or first contribution to any social network. Exchanging public and private messages, list groups they are connected to, and make friends in a variety of ways. Commenting on others submissions is a great way to interact in the social network world.

The core topics and who the social network draws to its site are key to choosing if that site is for you. Most of the social networks around are free to join and become a member of. This will allow you the freedom to get to know a site and see if it is for you or not. Get connected on the Internet and enjoy.

Increasing Your Dominant vs. Subordinate Participation In Communities

I had an interesting conversation with a customer (who runs a technology user community). Most of his users in the community are as we know. In this case its closer to 99-0.95-0.05 (Only 0.05% of his users contribute).The one metric they wanted to have improve is the contribution % of his community to a representative 90-9-1. I cant say numbers but going from 0.05% to 1% would be HUGE for this community. We followed a 3 step approach towards understanding the community and ways to increase its participation.\r \r The one takeaway: Community incentive management (rewarding community members) is a motivating factor for increased participation.

1. Basic community site survey: Since my company does consulting in this area, we looked at usability, brand alignment, measurement metrics and demographic analysis. This 3 day effort gave us insights into the details around the 0.05 % of the people who contribute and why they were passionate enough to do so.

2. Detailed user forensics: This involved looking at users from the perspective of time (when they post), where they post from (work vs. home), access methods (WiFi vs LAN), Location (Which part of US), what threads they post on, community competition (what other sites vie for their communities attention) etc.

3. User surveys and interviews: Conducted over 2 weeks we had about 25 community members participate from a sample size we targetted of 150. Range of questions from what would get them to participate more, to what time is best for them to add tot he discussion.

There were a range of suggestions for improvement, but they key we found was most users did not feel they got anything out of participation. There will be about 10-15 members in your community that do it for \”the greater good\” and from the sense of giving something back. To get the next 20% increase in participation we highly recommend you manage a good incentive system for your community.

The Advertising Factor

The Relationship Economy will usher in a new era of mediums for advertisers seeking to match their product/service with an affinity of YOUR Brands preferences and privileges. As individuals further the creation of their brand, on numerous social networks, their connections and conversations provide specific data which identifies an audience with specific affinities to branded products and services, an advertisers dream for target marketing.

The Pundits Perspective

Market research firm Compete has recently released a report on the convergence of social networking and e-commerce. The report, s-commerce: beyond MySpace and YouTube, finds consumer visits to social networking sites have increased 109 percent since January 2004, and page views per visitor have grown by 414 percent in the same time period. Social networkers spend less time viewing traditional media and have more discretionary income and a greater penchant for online shopping than non-social networking site users.

Some marketers are going to advertise on MySpace and YouTube because they are the two easier places to go. That will be an obvious choice. But the return on investment isnt going to be any better than traditional customer acquisition campaigns, he said. Its stupid to just advertise on MySpace and assume you are a social marketer. The better thing to do is get your customers associated with your brand. On the other hand, launching a branded social network means competing for a dwindling slice of end users attention.

Compete found visitors to social networking services are currently involved with an average of three such sites, and that these would only be willing to add a fourth Web site before losing interest.Already people are starting to become social-saturated. For marketers, there are not going to be as many opportunities as they think there are. So they need to be more creative. The key, DiMarco says, is to create social Web sites as part of a brand designed to track customers and listen to them at the same time.

THE PUNDITS ARE MISSING A VERY BIG POINT! IT IS ABOUT YOUR BRAND, NOT THEIRS.

As written about earlier, when you have your own personal network portal you will be controlling your own network of connections, articles, news, videos, documents and related media you want on your personal network portal. As an individual with certain affinities the data from YOUR network will clearly indicate what YOUR network is inclined to purchase at any given time. The advertising opportunism is not by having a brand set up THEIR own network rather by forming a relationship with YOUR network. The brand is YOU and the advertisers could win by having a direct relationship with you, if you want them to. If YOUR network creates traffic, connections to like minded individuals and businesses then YOUR network is a distribution point of reach. Ones value to advertisers is directly proportional to ones affinities, reach, value propositions, connections and profile. In the Relationship Economy YOUR brand builds trusting and lasting relations.

YOUR brand creates commerce through sharing value and values. YOUR brand generates revenue and if one wants to advertisE on the back of YOUR brand, they will pay based on your metrics, your value, your reach and your richness. A new paradigm in advertising models and one which will require advertising executives to Rethink their entire approach to The Relationship Economy. The best thing for advertisers to do is get their brand associated with YOUR brand! Then and only then will marketers achieve success in reaching swarms!

These days it seems like anyone who is anyone is on MySpace. In a short time MySpace has literally exploded from just a few members to millions of members around the world. This astounding phenomenon has made MySpace one of the most popular websites around and a virtual necessity for those who want to make friends through an online community or find old friends with whom they have lost contact. It has become one of the first places many Internet users turn when they want to learn more about someone in particular or make new friends.

A few years ago the term, Google it became synonymous for the practice of using a search engine to find more information about a particular person or subject. Internet users were using the term Google it even when they were using different search engines because the name Google had been branded so well it became somewhat of a generic term for search engine. MySpace is well on its way to becoming the brand synonymous with online communities. Although there are other websites which offer similar services, MySpace is quickly becoming the most dominant one.

Who is On MySpace?

The answer to this question is just about everyone. While this answer is not nearly true it is also very appropriate. It is not nearly true because in terms of factual evidence, despite the large number of MySpace members, there are still many more people in the world who do not participate in the MySpace online community. However, an answer of everyone to this question is also fitting because individuals from different cultures around the world and different age groups are all using MySpace.

Unlike online message boards and discussion forums where members are usually somewhat similar and share a particular interest, there are members who are vastly different in the MySpace community. MySpace members represent just about all nationalities, sexual orientations, financial levels, occupations, political beliefs, religions and other variables. While it is true that members who are vastly different may not be interacting to a tremendous extent on MySpace there is certainly representation from all walks of life on MySpace.

MySpace Lurkers

We have already discussed the extent of members on MySpace but the MySpace community is really much larger than the membership of the website. It is important to note that members websites are viewable to the public unless they are specifically designated as private websites. This means many members websites can be viewed by those who do not join MySpace. These individuals are known as lurkers and they effectively increase the size of the community by an immeasurable number.

Lurkers may be completely harmless individuals who are just looking to read about others but who have no interest in sharing their own personal information or they can be predators. The latter is more serious because these lurkers can use the information they find on MySpace to stalk or otherwise harass members of their own community. Many members of MySpace include both pictures and their hometown on their MySpace profile. This information can be used, by unscrupulous predators, to gather more information about the individual. For this reason care should always be used when posting information on MySpace.

Why Arent You on MySpace?

If you arent on MySpace, many of your friends may wonder why especially if they use this community. In fact many members of MySpace join simply as a way to have fun and keep in touch with their friends and relatives. However, there are number of reasons some individuals may not join MySpace. For many time constraints is a significant factor which leads them to avoid joining MySpace. MySpace can become somewhat addicting with members spending increasing amounts of time updating their website or searching for new friends in the community.

Others may not participate in MySpace because they find some websites in the community to be offensive. There are guidelines regarding the types of materials which can be posted on MySpace but there is always the potential for questionable materials to escape the attention of the MySpace administrators. There is also the possibility that members will be offended by content that is permissible.
