Why is It so Important to List Accomplishments on Resumes?

Your accomplishments are what distinguish you from your competitors in the job-search process. All things being equal, if a hiring manager were looking at two identical prospective employees who could handle the tasks of the job perfectly well, but one had accomplished more than the other, who do you think is going to get a phone call? Obviously, the person who accomplishes the most wins.

What exactly IS an accomplishment?

An accomplishment is when you do something successfully. If you make a positive difference at work, you are accomplishing something. From an employers standpoint, it is even better if you can state your achievements in a measurable or quantifiable way.

What does that mean? Use numbers whenever you can to state HOW you achieved the results you are affirming. Being able to quantify your skills and abilities makes other people perceive you in a very positive way. Why? Quantified accomplishments mean RESULTS.

Employers are all about results. Employers are all about the bottom line.

For instance, if you increased production of the best selling product at your company, by HOW MUCH did you increase it? 15% 20% 25% Quantify your statements whenever possible. Numbers SHOW results.

Remember being in kindergarten? Wasnt it great when you could bring something to school for SHOW AND TELL? Lesson #1: Its awesome to be able to bring something that no one else has. You get more recognition. Lesson #2: If you show your classmates something, it has significantly more meaning than if you tell them something. They literally have something to grab a hold of.

In your resume, you have to show the employer why you are the best person for the job. SHOW the employer that you have something to offer that no one else does. You have to be credible. You should never lie. You can, however, make yourself look better than your competitors. Use descriptive active language to engage the employer when reading your resume. Make your words jump off the page and grab the readers attention.

At the same time, you have to guide the employer through your resume clearly and eloquently so that only one conclusion can be reached: YOU are the best candidate for the job. if you simply state your previous job title and the duties you performed, you are not helping them to SEE who you really are. Youre just telling them. Quantify your accomplishments and let them see just what you can do for them.

Let your accomplishments sing your praises for you. When writing your resume, let yourself shine through the job duties in a way that resonates with employers. Show results by quantifying your accomplishments.

People ask me daily, “Do I really need a cover letter?

And every day I answer, “Yes, you do!”

The cover letter is an essential document in your job search. If you want to end up on the “contact for an interview” list, read on to learn how a professionally written cover letter can benefit you.

A cover letter announces what position you would like to apply for.

Imagine you are a decision maker for a Fortune 500 company. This company receives over two million internet hits daily on its careers page. Now consider how many resumes might be submitted each week. Without an accompanying cover letter, the hiring manger has to weed through the resume pile, attempting to discern what job-seekers are applying for. It is likely that many of the resumes end up being tossed aside. Sending a cover letter keeps the hiring manager from making assumptions when it concerns your resume.

Many people dont seem to take the employer/recruiter into account when writing a resume. This is a big mistake. Think of the reader-it needs to be interesting to them, because you want them to keep reading. Think of it as a novel or a story-this can really help when writing your resume.

Write with your new employer in mind-

Try to visualize what they are looking for in an employee, and make yourself fit those criteria by what you say in your resume. This is another thing that can really help when writing your resume.

Focus on prior achievements-

Instead of telling them that your current job has certain responsibilities and requirements, let them know exactly what you have achieved there. Achievements outweigh responsibilities because every job has responsibilities, but not every potential employee has achievements.

Be different-
\r Gaining that initial foot in the door from the resume and moving onto interview is more about being eye catching than it is having excellent qualifications or experience. Anything you can do to make yourself stand out (within reason) can only be a good thing. Try to use different words than you imagine other candidates will use. Tiny changes like that can really help. Writing your resume is about trying to stand out!

Mention things from the given job description-

When writing a resume for a particular job vacancy, try to go over the job specification offered and link it to your own skills and abilities in the resume. If you can go one stage further and offer proof that you meet the particular criteria, you will be singling yourself out as a very strong candidate!

With cold cover letters, job applicants are trying to spontaneously get hold of a job offer that has not been specifically declared. That is why cold cover letters are sometimes known as unsolicited cover letters.

In reality, people may see that using cold cover letters is just a waste of time. Most people think that the possibilities of getting a job is almost zero whenever applicants have to opt for cold cover letters.

What these people do not know is that companies will always be hiring people. People come and go and there are times that the resignation becomes so abrupt that the process of hiring another person will take time to get published and be known to the public.

However, if people will use cold cover letters, they might be tapping on a hidden job application that is yet to be disclosed. Perfect timing as you may call it, but this can really happen.

In the end, employers may even consider such applications and may no longer need to advertise the position if the applicant is already appropriate for the job. This would mean less competition and greater chances of getting hired.

Cold cover letters vs. Regular cover letters

There are some small discrepancies between cold cover letters and the regular cover letters. Although they both have the same goal, which is to land an interview and eventually get a job offer, the construction of cold cover letters is slightly different from the regular cover letters.

Heres why:

1. More interesting

Cold cover letters should be more interesting. If regular cover letters should be made in such a way that it attracts a potential employer, cold cover letters should be able to keep the reader on the hook. This means that the cover letter should contain more weight and should create an impression that the possibility of hiring a particular applicant for the job could be an advantage.

It is best to state the value of the persons application. Keep in mind that there are no specific jobs advertised, hence, coming up with ideas that will tell the potential employer that you could be the right person for some jobs for the organization could just be your ticket to success.

The thing is, there might not be some existing need for such positions but the problem is already there. And so, when the employer sees you as a potential solution to the problem, he might just consider you for a possible position.

2. Request for interview

Even though regular cover letters also aim in getting an interview, cold cover letters should have a strong need for such appointment. It is best if you could emphasize on discussing the matters with your potential employer.

Boiled down, cold cover letters should have greater attention-grabbing power. The ability to attract a potential employer to read your cover letter is one thing, but keeping the employer on the hook and continues to read the cover letter even if there are no available positions yet is the ultimate value of cold cover letters.

Get Your Resume To The Right Person

There are proven techniques and activities that can deliver your rsum to the person (or persons) who can offer you the job you seek. Some of those strategies are reviewed in this communications. Follow the simple plan offered here and guide your steps towards getting the best use of your resume.

As in most activities related to business and career, a skill central to success is good Organization. Work smart and hard. Keep meticulous records. They will be invaluable to you through your job search. List the date your rsum was sent out, and to whom it was sent. Track the title of the jobs you apply for, include any specific information regarding hiring contacts, such as names or specific email addresses, or any notes.

The next step is to review advertised positions that are appropriate to your training, skills and experience. The three main sources of these job postings are newspapers, Internet job boards, and company websites. Garnering opportunities from these three sources will give you a broad perspective on what your job prospects look like. If a job is posted in the paper, on all the major job boards, and on a company website, you can infer that the company is spending some money to fill the job, and they have a certain sense of urgency. On the other hand, if you find a job opening listed only on a company career page, then perhaps they are looking for a very specialized skill set, or would prefer to promote from within. This is the kind of information that it pays to note in your records, as these subtleties help guide your job search activities. As you analyze the job openings, always cross-check information. If you see a job posting that catches your attention, check the website of the company offering the job, see if the job is posted there too. If the job is not listed on the career area of their website, it may have already been filled, or you may find a more appropriate job title you werent expecting to see. You may also be able to find the name, phone number and email address of the person to whom your information should be directed, as contact information does not always appear in a job board listing, but often does on web pages. As often as possible, direct your communications to a specific person, or at least a specific title. If you cannot find a name or title associated with a job posting, call the switchboard operator at the company you seek employment with, request the names and titles of the individuals who handle Human Resources in the department where you wish to work. Verify email or physical addresses too, so you can send your resume to the right person.

Although it is generally recommended only to send your rsum once to any given employer, if handled correctly, multiple sends of your rsum can indicate to your employer that you are highly motivated and detail oriented. For example, if a job posting instructs you to submit your rsum by email, then do so. But include a note stating that you will follow up your email submission with a hard copy of your credential to be delivered by standard post. Then, wait twenty-four hours before posting your rsum, to give the company a chance to notify you if they would rather you not send a hard copy. Conversely, if you are instructed to submit a hardcopy rsum by mail, do so, and after two or three days have passed, follow that up with an email containing your rsum and an explanation that this is simply a follow-up to a paper rsum that you submitted by mail, reaffirming your interest in speaking with someone in greater detail about the opening. As before, be sure to keep meticulous notes on the contacts you make out to employers, including dates, information sent, addresses used, etcetera.

Distributing the business cover letter over email

Internet made it possible to mass mail millions of people worldwide, hence your competitive advantages begin with composing a better cover letter or sales letter than the others, which is a very hard thing to accomplish. The golden rule is to use both tactics, direct mail and email communication to address your buyers or business partners. Smart businesses will use both ways to get their word out.

Using e-mail to spread the word about your new product or service, requires the implementation of some key guidelines on email business cover letters:

1. Correct formatting - the email reader needs a certain type of formatting if you want to have them want to read and digest what you send them. Try to follow these few simple steps:

a. Language - the language should be simple and crisp.

If you make it understandable for a 13 year old, than everyone will get your point. Do not use exaggerations or words that are uncommon or even strange.

b. Not less than 4 and not more than 10 sentences should be used for each paragraph.

If you are not able to explain the main objective of your paragraph in 5 sentences, than do not bother to write it at all.

c. Length - as long as it is compelling you could use any length you want or need.

Though it depends on the business you are in to, your business cover letter could contain anywhere between 3 and 7 paragraphs.

d. Color - do not use too much color or highlighting.

3. Body content - whatever you write in the body of the business cover letter should be compelling enough to get your foot into the door.

The business cover letter is not the end of your communication with your prospective audience, be sure to give them reasons to opt in for your regular ezine notifications. For this purpose there should be some offer or promise for an offer in your business cover letter to have the customer wait and want to know more about you and your business.

The more attractive the offer, the faster would be the reaction of the customer.

So, you are looking for a job and want to create a professional resume. You have many different options when it comes to creating a professional resume. There are many different places that offer this service to individuals.

It is important when creating any resume to realize that this is the first impression your prospective employer will have of you. A professional resume is a must if you are seeking a high level position, but all resumes should have a professional quality. Why do something half way when you can do it the right way? Creating a resume is not difficult. You are not operating on the brain of a close relative, you are simply writing a list of your accomplishments that will distinguish you for the position of which you are seeking.

The first thing you need to do when creating a professional resume is to put the objective of the position which you are seeking on the heading of the page. There are many different templates if you decide to create your professional resume on the computer. Choose one that is simple and elegant. Avoid anything with colored paper or flowers. Choose a classic template.

You should include your name, address, phone number and e-mail address on the heading of your professional resume. Make it simple and use a regular font. To not make it extra large or use a fanciful font. Remember, you are creating a professional resume and want to maintain a look of decorum throughout the document.

State the position for which you are applying under the heading. This is a matter of style. It can be off to the left of the page or in the center, it really does not matter. It does matter, however, that your prospective employer knows which position you seek. They may have many different positions available within the company and this way they will know exactly which one for which you are applying.

You will next want to describe your experience. You should start with the last place of your employment and list all of your duties and accomplishments performed in that position. You should list the name of the company, your title, any promotions you received, and the ending date. If you are still working for the company, you can state that you are still presently working for this company.

For your experience, it is recommended that you use bullet points to outline all of the knowledge that you have regarding the position for which you are applying. Only put down the information that pertains to the position for which you are applying and do no hesitate to elaborate. Bullet points make it easier for the person reading your professional resume to read about your experience. It does take up more space on the paper, but is better than a long, drawn out paragraph.

You can also list other places where you have worked, the name of the company, the starting and ending dates as well as the experience derived from those positions. You do not need to list any more than three positions on your professional resume and they should only pertain to the job for which you are applying. Your prospective employer does not need to know that you worked at Diary Queen when you were 16.

At the end of the professional resume, you will want to list your education, starting with your last school. If you have a PHD or an MBA, they come first. Name the school and your grade point average as well as what degree you received. Next, you will name your undergraduate school as well as the degree or degrees which you earned. Those who have an extensive education do not have to put down their high school on their resume. If you earned an MBA, it is pretty much assumed that you graduated high school. The only exception would be if the person with whom you are interviewing is an alma mater of your old high school. In that case, put down the high school you attended.

You should also put down any professional accomplishments or clubs to which you belong. This should come at the end of the resume. Professional accomplishments and clubs should relate to the job at hand. It is not necessary to put down that you belong to a knitting club. It is also not necessary to put down any hobbies or interests.

There is a popular misconception that a resume should only be one page long. A professional resume, however, is usually more than one page. While you do not want to send your prospective employer a mini novel, you do not want to leave out any skills or knowledge that you have that will help you to attain the job.

A professional resume is not difficult to create. Remember to keep it simple, straight forward, and bullet all of your accomplishments. This is the time to highlight all of the wonderful things that you did throughout your career, so make it shine. Stay away from fancy fonts and colored paper and keep the document classic and neat. Creating a professional resume is not difficult, just be sure to stick to the accomplishments and information that pertain to the position which you seek.
