Guitar Lessons - Guitar Vibrato

Published by admin under Popular Music

Playing a guitar without vibrato is like eating Mexican food without salsa. Vibrato is one of the most definitive techniques in defining your musical style, your own personal unique sound. No two players have the same vibrato sound. Some play slow and wide while others play narrow and fast, and that\’s the beauty behind spending a lot of time learning different vibrato techniques. It\’s like eating different salsa\’s every time you go to your favorite taco stand. Enough talk about food, lets talk technique.

Vibrato is sometimes confused with tremolo. Basically it is just a technique of vibrating the string sharp and flat around a root note. For example if you are playing the 7th fret on the 3rd string with your 3rd finger on your fret hand you can just push the note up slightly and them pull it down slightly. Do this in quick succession so the over riding effect is a \”wobbly\” tone around the root note you are playing. Use your hand, wrist, and arm to make the movements. Never just wiggle a finger. Some people use a technique of pulling the string down towards the floor and then releasing back up.

Try this in a variety of speeds and levels of bending during your vibrato. The trick is to be consistent and smooth with your motion. If you are playing a slow blues riff then you may want to slow down and make a wide circular motion with the string, or if you are playing a fast rock lick you may just ad a fast narrow vibrato to accent the final note in a run.

It is possible to add vibrato using any finger you play with, but it is most commonly done with the first and third finger on the fret hand. Using your first finger is a bit trickier. I usually use my first finger for fast vibratos similar to BB Kings style. I will literally lift my other finger far off the fret board, press down and just \”vibrate\” the string as fast and as open as possible. That\’s funny the work vibrato is a lot like vibrate, because that\’s actually what you are doing vibrating the string.

When you combine vibrato with string bending, harmonics and legato techniques you begin to discover the musician inside of you. Playing guitar is about discovering your inner flow of creativity and having the techniques to be able to express them. Vibrato is one of the more personal and effective techniques. As with all aspect of playing guitar you need to experiment with these techniques, and most of all have fun!

The Piano Keyboard and the Open Position Chord

Published by admin under Popular Music

Did you know that the piano keyboard is not used to its fullest potential? And that thousands of beginning piano students start out by playing a three-note triad that is as outdated as the dinosaur?

It\’s true. The piano keyboard is huge! Over 80 keys big. Why not come up with a chord structure that uses more keys? Why not indeed!

There is a chord structure called the Open Position chord that uses more than 2 octaves of the keyboard. Both hands are called into play here to create a modern sounding seventh chord that is used frequently in pop, jazz, and new age music.

It\’s not an easy chord structure to learn right away, BUT once learned, it allows you to sound like a professional pianist right away! Why? Because of the way the chord is structured. It\’s easy to sound modern when the sound coming from the chord is. It\’s really a no-brainer and it\’s a shame that most piano teachers either never use it or have never heard of it.

I first came across it in a book titled \”The Four-Way Keyboard System\” by Alan Swain, a noted jazz pianist. As soon as I played this chord, I knew I had found something special. With it, I could create modern sounds immediately. And I could use it to improvise my own music - something I\’ve always wanted to do.

Once I learned how to play this special chord structure, I learned how to move it up and down the piano keyboard thus learning how to use all 88 keys. It was thrilling to be able to do this. Why not use the piano keyboard to its fullest potential. Learn how to play the Open Position piano chord!

Professional Studio Tips: Virtual Canvas

Published by admin under Popular Music

Whoa, 6am comes awfully early when I spend all night in the studio. I can\’t help it thoughI\’m stuck in the moment like a deer in the headlights. The studio is virtual reality and was so long before it migrated into the realm of microprocessors. In that environment anything and everything is possibleand it happens on a second by second basis. And you know what? No matter how well you conceive the final product to be, and how diligently you plan, practice, and prepare, the end is always greater than sum of your anticipation. You can\’t foresee how your internal rhythms will respond to the bright snap of a snare, your imagination will perceive the wail of a blues harp rippling through consciousness carried on by a spacious echo, or the sweetness of an acoustic guitar joyfully ringing a chorus. These things first happen in the playback. There always is your faith that the world will love and wholeheartedly accept what you hear too. That is what it is all about.

The studio is a blank canvas. There are four points of reference on this canvas, but you should not look at it (or think of it) as a white sheet of paper before your eyes. If you take that sheet of paper, look at the EDGE of it, and tilt the back upward a bit, that will give you a physical picture of the canvas dimensions. Can you picture it? The four dimensions of recorded music are Left and Right (of course) imaged by the pan control, and \”painted\” by the left and right speakers. Obvious reference points–it is the way we experience live sound.

What are the two other dimensions? Top and bottom? No, in order to simulate that we would need top and bottom fade controls and speakers to deliver those dimensions. When you hear a band do you hear music down low or up high? No. The other two canvass reference points are front and rear. How then, do you sonically move something from the front to the rear you might wonder? Volume. Our brains are wired to perceive that which is loud as closer than that which is quiet. It\’s natures way. This is why we must look at our sheet of paper canvas on edge, to get left, right, front and rear.

With those four dimensions in mind you can begin putting down sonic paint on your canvas. It is not important at this point to know where everything will be placed, but these reference points will help you think about your sound, and plan your work. When it is time to mix down, you will place all your colors on that virtual canvaswhich is of course, the air itself.

There always is a drive for ultimate perfection in the studio, but take if from a guy that has lived in a studio for years, perfection is relativerelative to the moment and your state of mind. The first hour in is ultimate perfection, and twelve hours later the definition of perfection warps. Consider this, most of us will not have the opportunity or funding to spend in a commercial studio, with top gun players, distinguished producers, or leading-edge engineers.

Think back at the songs that you have loved over the years, especially vintage songs of the sixty\’s and seventy\’s. Imperfection is part of their characteristic charm. You probably will not be able to match the perfection of todays commercial musicso decide what is important. I have always been a huge advocate of a great performance and lively presentation over a flawless output. People will respond to the musicnot necessarily the complexity of the song. Remember that, it will help you think about your sound. I\’ll have more professional studio tips next articleuntil then stay on track.

A Guide To Piano

Published by admin under Popular Music

Pianos are referred to by some people as the mother of all instruments, and are amongst the most widely played musical instrument in the world. Every single aspect about the piano such as its tone, melodious sound and indeed even its grand looks is wonderful. For a music lover, piano music is so sweet that it makes their heart listen to it over and over again. Given below are some interesting information about this wonderful musical instrument that has enthralled generations of music lovers.

Pianos are musical instruments that can be used for producing percussion, string or keyboard music. Invented by Bartolomeo Cristifori of Florence, Italy, the piano was originally known as pianoforte in Italian. In the initial days of its invention, a piano had 85 keys or 7 octaves from A0 to A7. However, modern versions of the piano have 88 keys or 7 1/3 octaves. An octave is a combination of 5 black keys and 7 white keys.

Pianos are generally of four types namely the Concert Grand, Grand Piano, Baby Grand and the Upright Piano. Concert Grand pianos are the classical models that make the art of playing the piano an amazing experience. Grand Pianos are generally intended for playing at the home and for learners. Baby Grand Pianos are used by beginners and novices, as they are simpler to learn. Upright Pianos are smaller in size and ideal for small homes. Different people have different needs and the availability of piano in various shapes and sizes helps meet the requirements of pianists of different levels and tastes.

Pianos are differentiated on the basis of their shapes sizes colors, sounds, various types of wood finishes, looks, costs and reliability. Many pianists today prefer to use digital pianos, made by reputed piano makers such as Korg, Roland and Yamaha. The real fun of playing a piano lies in the acoustic pianos, which are generally very expensive. The costs of acoustic pianos are typically in the range of $20000 for a good baby grand piano and almost $400000 for a higher quality concert grand piano. Amongst the many sellers of premium quality acoustic pianos are Steinway & Sons and Bosendorfer, either of who have built a reputation over time. There are some real good acoustic used pianos also found on the Internet.

Singers, Bands, & Artist Development!

Published by admin under Popular Music

Have you ever wondered what exactly artist development is, what its not and why acts need it? With all of the artist press kits, new artist showcases and cd,s that Ive either attended, listened to, or was asked to evaluate, I can tell you that not many young artists understand what artist development is. You would think with the age of the internet and instant access to vital information for artists to chew on and utilize, that there would be a better understanding out there, but there really isnt. Its unfortunate for so many and I guess fortunate for a few, that so many really dont know the ins and outs to even get their foot in the door, but lets face it, not everyones a go getter or even minimally motivated for that matter. So what does it take to get your music listened to and then further looked at for a possible management deal or record contract? In this short article, I will attempt to look at a few concepts that should give you some insight and serve to move you in the right direction.

The first concept is fairly easy to grasp, but few do so. And that is, dont follow the road most traveled. Most who make it in the business certainly have their story to tell, but each individual will more than likely give you a completely different background to their attainment of success. If you travel with the crowd where you have to communicate with a certain vibe or role that you must uphold, then youre in the wrong crowd following the wrong definition of what will get you to your artist deal. If you look at multiple individuals who have made it in their perspective careers you will hear stories that dont sound anything like the crowd you might be running with. Think about that the next time you are reading some biography of some famous individual and see if that idea doesnt hold true.

Your role in the artist development showdown is going to have to be one of being prepared. You know how many artist press kits, bios, and cd,s that I have sorted through and wondered and still do, if people are just not putting any effort into it or are they just clueless or just plain some of both? In order to gain access to the heavyweights in the music business, you will have to have a genuine look of already obtained success. This comes from demos that are knock your socks off good, from press kits that really create an image, that specifically being yours, and a marketing approach that says We have arrived. How do you do all of that? Well at ReelMusician.com we always make it our priority to make sure that any press kit or master quality song demo is top notch no excuses, just top notch. We do that by simply using the best and so should you. We have partnered with Chris Huston on master quality song demos. Chris Huston, and you probably already know the name has engineered and/or produced War, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Blood, Sweat & Tears, James Brown, Van Morrison, Eric Burden, Mitch Ryder, The Rascals, Wilson Pickett, and we havent even mentioned probably another 40 -50 top name acts. Get the picture? If you want to gain attention from music business insiders, than you will have to look like you have already arrived. If you are genuinely trying to put your best foot forward in regards to your press kit or song demos, dont hesitate to contact us at ReelMusician.com for any questions. We will be glad to look at what you are doing and see how you can get there.

So while on the surface it might look like that artist development is a company taking a potential artist and working with them throughout the artist development process, its really you taking control of your career by implementing key artist development processes and connecting the dots on the front end. Who else do you think is going to do this some magical and powerful music exec who knows nothing about you is just all of a sudden going to notice that you havent really been doing a darn thing about your career, but he or she is just going to say the word and bam youre a star? Lets get real. You are the key to artist development from the start and throughout. Nobody knows your styles, your look, your comfort levels with certain styles of music, stage image than you. Anybody can be an expert in this field, but nobody knows you like you So get involved in your own artist development.

Start by taking inventory of who you are as a person, what you like and dont like. Does your image on stage measure up and convey who you are or is it a fake front where many can see through the forced imaging? I dont know Im just asking questions. What does your music and image look like together. Are they a match or do you need to fine tune a few areas. Is your press kit conveying who you are? Is your press kit professional? You cant afford to let two areas of your artist career take second place and that is your artist demo and press kit. To be honest, its been our experience at ReelMusician.com, that most dont really know how to put together an artist press kit. Most artists try to emulate and recycle whats already out there and dont really have the first clue to an effective artist press kit. Artist press kits are really marketing tools and just like there are marketing experts within any given company, you really should go to the experts for this piece of artist development. Dont hesitate to contact us at ReelMusician.com should you have any questions on artist press kits or anything else for that matter. We just want to see you succeed.

In closing, and I know that this is a difficult area for many young artists, but look at your strengths and weaknesses, devise a plan, make the needed corrections, call us if you need to with any questions, and fine tune and implement the needed changes to secure the attention that you will need from music business insiders.

So, You Wanna Be a Rock N\’ Roll Star-ling?

Published by admin under Popular Music

Rock n\’ Roll has become somewhat of a generic term used to identify a wide variety of popular music today. Like many other things associated with this generation, it has been reduced to an almost pathetic state of relativism, but it wasn\’t always so.

When Rock n\’ Roll was born, it offered up a fresh new sound that was radical and different. Rockers such as Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley and the Comets, and Elvis, among others, burst onto the scene in such a way that audiences were amazed, some were shocked and others were absolutely appalled. However, most of us can now look back in hindsight and recognize the important influence these early artists had on the direction that popular music was to take.

Which brings me to the point of this article. Last week, my husband informed me of an interesting fact about a little bird known as a starling. Since we happen to have a family of them living under the eave of our house, he has been having fun recording them with his new camcorder. He showed me the clip and pointed out that I should listen to them sing. At first they sounded like themselves. Then, all of a sudden, one of them sang like a meadowlark! He told me that he has heard them sound like magpies, ravens, and even a rooster once! Starlings love to mimic other birds.

Mr. B.B. King once told a class of young guitar students that he didn\’t care if they could play like him. No one needs another B.B. King, he said; that\’s already been done. You\’ve got to find your own voice.

This is a wise piece of advice from someone who knows from whence he speaks, so please take heed. Do you have dreams of really making it big someday? Then let me ask you an important question: are you going to be a Rock n\’ Roll Star or a Rock n\’ Roll Star–ling? How you answer, may well determine your future.

Next Up? Holy Hip-Hop

Published by admin under Popular Music

While the hip-hop industry tends to balk at Gospel emcees, DJs remain unsure about what to do with hip-hops inspirational subgenre, Gospel rap. Earlier this month, the Recording Academy provided a solution–adding a new music category titled, Best Rock Gospel or Best Rap Gospel. Nominees and an award that will represent what is more commonly known as holy hip-hop (HHH), will make its debut during the 49th annual Grammy Awards on February 11, 2007. The category will include Christian emcees that specialize in hip-hop music. The addition is a viable move given HHHs growing appeal.

One of the most influential advocates of holy hip-hop is rap pioneer, Christopher Play Martin. Martin is best known for his role in the Kidn Play rap duo and as an actor in the House Party trilogy. From executive producing video projects to gaining exposure for the genre, Martin lends his full support to the holy hip-hop movement. In addition to working with a myriad of premier holy hip-hop artists, Martins HP4 Digital Works & Solutions (www.hp4digitalworks.com) production company released a movie titled, Holy Hip-Hop, which made its DVD debut in March.

I am excited for the artists and feel that [they] can finally be recognized for their efforts, Martin commented.

Although a little known fact, holy hip-hop has a 20 plus-year history that has seen exponential growth in recent years. The Gospel Music Association (GMA) estimates that Christian rock and hip-hop music accounts for 25% of all Gospel music sales. According to the GMA, double-digit sales growth is largely due to churches embracing diversity in music to appeal to youth and adults.

Holy Hip-Hops A-List

Two Atlanta based churches: World Changers Church International and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church help fuel the holy hip-hop community. With close to 55,000 members between them, the churches play host to many holy hip-hop supporters and industry A-listers. Dr. Creflo A. and Taffi Dollar are pastors of World Changers Church in College Park, GA and New York, NY. Mrs. Dollar is also the CEO of Arrow Records the recording label for Canton Jones. A Grammy Award nominee, Jones has amassed appeal in churches across the U.S. Africa, and Europe. The most musically diverse of his holy hip-hop peers, Jones is also the president and CEO of his own company, CAJO International. Jones versatility and crossover appeal grants him access to such events as the Vibe Music Fest, the Miami Spring Fest, the Bobby Jones Gospel Industry Retreat, and Bishop T.D. Jakes MegaFest. Notably, Jones was the only holy hip-hop artist represented at David Banners Heal the Hood concert in Atlanta last fall.

A HHH industry first, Jones kicked-off his 2006 concert tour and live DVD recording with a pre-concert Purple Carpet (versus red) event. The sold-out concert featured a slew of HHH artists based primarily in the South. The concert was a landmark production hosted by comedian, John Gray (http://mannagod.com) and chocked full of dancers, actors, and guest artists. Jones has three albums to his credit to include his latest release: The Password: Access Granted. Like his counterparts, Jones has an entourage of HHH affiliates who include independent recording artists Big Ran, Da Fam, Mouthpiece, and Kay Bizzy, all of whom are members of World Changers.

New Birth is the home church for four key supporters of the holy hip-hop movement: Minister eDDie Velez, Fatima Hall, Edward Young Dirty Long, and Lil iROCC Williams.

In addition to being a rapper, TV and radio personality, eDDie Velez is also the senior director of Youth Development at New Birth. Velez started on the HHH circuit in 1998 when he debuted on Hot 97.5s holy hip-hop radio pilot. He lends 25 years of experience to the HHH movement. Currently, Da Preachin Puerto Rican, is the host of the syndicated Holy Hip-Hop radio and TV program. He is also the host for the annual Holy Hip Hop Artist Showcase & Music Awards held in Atlanta.

Fatima Hall is the founder and publisher for IMAGE Magazine, a nationally distributed print medium geared towards youth and young adults. Although faith-based, the magazine has grown to appeal to a broad and international audience by focusing on universal interests like music, fashion, and social trends. Hall frequently highlights the accomplishments and influence of HHH artists such as Canton Jones and Lil iROCC both of who have graced the magazines cover. In addition to having magazines that advance the genre, HHH also boasts popular audio outlets.

Edward \”Young Dirty\” Long is the son of New Births senior pastor, Bishop Eddie L. Long. To his credit, Young Dirty is the CEO and host of The Good Life Radio as well as the vice-president of Represent Entertainment, LLC. Like his father, Young Dirty has a groundbreaking ministry that reaches the masses. The Good Life Radio is a nationally syndicated radio show that airs in over 17 markets and via the Internet. The broadcast provides a diverse listening experience to include rap, R&B, contemporary Gospel, pop, urban hip-hop, and holy hip-hop. In addition to being a radio host, Young Dirty is also an inspirational speaker and an emcee that collaborates often on recording projects with mainstream and holy hip-hop artists.

Though little in stature, Lil iROCC has a big impact on the holy hip-hop community. At 16, he is both the youngest HHH artist and the youngest music executive. In 2004, iROCC, along with his dad and mentor, Big ROCC, established their own label, Authority Music. Since his debut album, iROCC has received numerous accolades and awards that reflect his skills and accomplishment. Like Jones, iROCC has crossover appeal and has garnered national and international acclaim with his peers and adult audiences. Although his approach is diverse (he collaborates with a variety of music artists), he remains predominately rap in terms of content. Duly mature for his age, iROCC sets a standard for HHH emcees.

Among other characteristics, holy hip-hops A-listers have the uncanny ability to reflect the lifestyle they lead without loosing the art, form, flavor or feel of hip-hop–a telltale sign that holy hip-hops present affect is sure to impact the music industry for years to come.

The Grizzly Man Soundtrack Music Review

Published by admin under Popular Music

The soundtrack to the movie Grizzly Man is amazingly magical and compelling. Richard Thompson heads a cast of five players that includes Jim O\’Rourke in a two day, improv studio session at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley to score Werner Herzog\’s film The Grizzly Man. They play a variety of instruments including cello and double bass, but the main mystery and magic is in Thompson\’s guitar and the interaction between the players, producers and Werner Herzog.

First of all, the movie is astounding. As I watched I kept commenting on the music not knowing the players. Some of the music is not good. But, as Herzog says, music is never background, in his movies. And as Thompson says, music is sophisticated but crude, that the music is in the edges and without those edges all you have left is notes with no music.

The music fits the documentary very well. The movie is set in Alaska and in some sense so is the music. The beauty of watching Thompson work while Herzog directs "Change the planet!" is amazing. His eyes are so beautiful, his smile. I was charmed by this music and film in a way that art rarely touches me anymore. The bends that the guitar does just tears your insides and moves like tears in all your blocked body parts. It transcends.

The connection of spirit captured by these three genius (Tim Treadwell, Thompson and Herzog) is a blessing to us all.

Beware Of "Gear Overload"

Published by admin under Popular Music

Fifteen years ago or so I wanted a new amp. One that would be loud as all get-out. One that would melt your face!!

So…I went to the local music store and got just that.

Boy…do I regret that now.

Sure…I had a great amp that was versitile. It was big enough and loud enough to use for stage volume without monitors. It sounded GREAT.

Hauling it around, however, turned out to be another story.

For those of us that are unfortunate enough to not be able to afford roadies (and I\’m quite sure most of us are not), I found that lugging this thing around from gig to gig was a royal pain in the rear.

Too heavy, too bulky, too loud for some clubs…

I got caught up in \”gear overload\”.

Sure, having a full Marshall stack would be great. Visually impressive even. But would it REALLY be necessary?

If you are blessed to have access to a great PA, large amps onstage really are not necessary. I have seen many, many bands over the years where the guitarist has a small combo. And you know what? That was all that was needed. Had a great sound without all of the bulk.

The same can apply to effects as well. You may be a stomp-box junkie, but let\’s be real here for a minute. I have seen players with ten-plus effects layed out on a monster-sized pedalboard. Just the cords look like a wiring nightmare! With technology today being what it is, you could probably have the same results using one of the many multi-effects units available.

Interestingly enough, the same is now almost (I say ALMOST) holding true for your tried and true guitar-arsenal. Got a Fender…AND a Gibson…and who knows what else? The new modeling guitars can offer a great diversity of sounds from the same ax - without having to carry them all around.

Don\’t get me wrong here - having a multitude of necessary gear is great.

But is it really necessary?

Essential Tips Showing You The Best Way To Learn To Play The Guitar

Published by admin under Popular Music

There is no fast and easy way to the learn guitar. It takes hard work and dedication but some techniques are much better then others giving you faster results.

Here are my tips that will show you the best way to learn to play the guitar. If anybody knows a better way than I would love to hear it but in the meantime this is what works for me and gives my students an advantage over their friends who are also learning how to play the guitar.

These guitar tips will give you a headstart but remember that to play the guitar well it requires lots of practice and whatever you do, dont give up.

Preparation is the key to good guitar playing

It is important to make sure that your equipment is in good order and that your guitar is tuned properly. There is no point in trying to play the guitar when you seem to be doing every thing right and it still sounds wrong. Dont make playing the guitar harder than it already is. Make it easy. I always try and find a space that is quiet and free from distraction and noise. If you have distractions and cant concentrate then it will make it a lot harder to learn how to play the guitar.

Know your guitar and love it

Cherish your guitar. Try to learn everything you can about it. Find out what every thing is called and be able to find it quickly. You really will find that this is one of the best ways to learn to play the guitar. It might surprise you to know that guitars are not all the same and each one sounds very different. You will find this out as you gain more experience. Over time, hopefully your enjoyment and appreciation of guitars grows too.

Know your skill level. You wont be Jimi Hendrix Overnight!

Be careful you dont start aiming too high! You do not want to frustrate your self on the first day by choosing something very advanced. Pick something easy to begin with. There are a lot of music books to start you off with some simple strumming patterns and old songs. The best way to learn to play the guitar is to start small and work your way up until you feel confident to progress to something harder and more entertaining. This is the point that most people learning the guitar give up. If you persevere at this stage you will make it and become a brilliant guitar player.

Stick with what you know and love

This is when it gets exciting. Once you have mastered the basics and are ready to move on to something harder try to find an artist you like and are familiar with and try and replicate parts of their songs. Sheet music for most bands are wildly available and I think is the most rewarding and the best way to learn to play the guitar, because you are making a song you know and like. It is a great feeling to be able to play one of your favourite bands songs on the guitar.

Gain confidence and organise your own mini performance

This guitar playing tip will give you a huge boost and you will want to learn how to play even better afterwards. When you feel like you are ready to progress try to focus all you time on one song and when you have practised it to death and burnt it your memory organize a small group of friend or family to listen to you play. The best way to learn to play the guitar is to have confidence in your self because the guitar is meant to be shared and enjoyed by everyone. It is not much fun sitting in a dark room playing to your self. Show your friends and family just how well you really can play the guitar. They will be very impressed and you will be very proud of yourself.

I hope that you found these tips helpful and continue to play for a very long time. Remember, the best way to learn to play the guitar is to have fun and share it with other people.

Let me know how you get on.

Good luck
