Word Meaning Change - From Macaroni to Macaroni Penguins

Published by admin under Language Courses

Words frequently change their meanings over time, and pursuing such change often illustrates cultural and historical shifts as well as changes in metaphors. The word macaroni has come down to us in its original meaning of a sort of pasta, but has also shifted its way down the garden path, now also appearing as part of the name of macaroni penguins.

Macaroni penguins are the most numerous penguin of all, there being an estimated nine million breeding pairs of them. They also might be the most colorful, but the reason for their name is what interests me most. Usually, the naming metaphor is obvious. When you hear of a chinstrap penguin, and see the black line ear to ear under its chin, the connection to a helmet with a chinstrap springs to mind immediately. But macaroni penguins?

When hearing the word, one thinks immediately about pasta, since macaroni is an English variant spelling of the Italian maccherone, (plural: maccheroni), referring to a pasta that technically must not contain eggs. Macaroni has been known in the US since none other than Thomas Jefferson introduced the first macaroni machine in 1789 on his return from serving as Ambassador to France.

But put pasta out of your mind. Even before 1789 the word macaroni was known in the US because of the macaroni fashion, which to me is the most interesting part of this story. And from the original use of the word to the point of naming penguins with the word come layer upon layer of metaphors and other associations.

In the 18th Century, maccherone in Italian also referred to a boorish fool. It is not unusual to use foods to describe people, and the foods need have absolutely nothing to do with the characteristic involved. Why do we call a nice person a good egg? Or an inactive person a couch potato? Years ago an attractive woman was called a tomato. So the first step in this separation of the literal meaning of macaroni as pasta from other uses of the word was calling a fool (in Italian) a maccherone.

Young men who had been on the Grand Tour to Italy adopted that word, as macaroni, to designate any fashion that was, foolishly perhaps, way over the top. They described such exagerated fashion as being very macaroni. These dandies or fops dressed in outrageous colors and stripes, had the highest powdered wigs (the fashion at the time) with long curls, possibly with a hat so high on the wig that you couldnt reach it, and they otherwise set themselves apart as being very noticeable and affected, in speech as well. They were the metrosexuals of their day, at very least. They may have used feathers, but that was not essential. These people willfully setting themselves apart as foolishly fashionable macaronis is the second phase of the genesis of the word.

The third phase of the story brings up the song Yankee Doodle, popular during the American Revolution, which makes fun of a Yankee who stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni. Unless one knows of the macaroni fashion, this line will never make sense. The song is laughing at a simple, nave Yankee who felt that nothing more than a single feather added to his cap would make him fashionable enough to be part of the macaroni fashion. These may have been alternative lyrics that started with the teasing of the British soldiers, but they were also enthusiastically taken over by the Yankees themselves, and incorporated into the song, possibly to boast that Yankees were indeed simpler, more basic folk than those across the Atlantic.

Only because of this song, where macaroni now became associated with a feather for the first time, we come to the fourth level of meaning shift, the macaroni penguin. Google the name and you will see that its another type of smaller penguin, distinguished by bright, thin, yellow and black feathers chaotically sprouting from above each ear. Knowing the full story of the changes in the word macaroni other than it referring to pasta, what more appropriate name could there be in this case than macaroni penguin?

Methods To Learn Spanish - A Few Well Tried And Tested Methods To Learn Spanish

Published by admin under Language Courses

When there is a will there is a way! This is a very old and precious saying, which truly says that if you want to do something, you can do it. Similarly, if you want to learn Spanish, you would be able to find a good number of methods to do so. Some of the most popular and easy to take up are as follows:

1.Regular language school classes in this method you find out a good language school in your neighborhood and register for the course you need basic, medium or advanced. In case such a school is not available in your neighborhood, you would need to consider moving closer to where you would find such a good school. The advantage of having to learn through a regular school is that this is a very systematic method of learning, especially good for people who need everything neatly scheduled in watertight compartments.

2.Part-time or evening classes this method is very similar to the above, but while the regular classes have more classes covered per day since these are regular classes, while the part-time classes cover less per day and hence the course would take longer to complete. Also, for these type of classes, you would definitely need to have the school in close vicinity either to your working place or home, to cut down in commuting hours and also be safe. It would not to have to drive every night late from your Spanish classes.

3.Online classes there is another type of course that is becoming very popular with every day that passes. This is the online course. This is the best for people who have a job and do cannot commute any more to attend the language classes. The online course usually offers audio-visual material and a personal online tutor, who could be reached at a particular time. You would have the choice to appear for the exams (which would be held at a specific time) in the school or a branch of the school close to the place you live.

4.Books though learning through books has becoming somewhat obsolete with the presence of the computer, this method is still holding its ground for some die-hard fans. Books are indeed a great source of knowledge and there are some exceptionally well deigned bi-lingual books that can help learning the language as good as any other method. These books most often come accompanied by audio-cassettes or CD-ROMs, which provide the phonetics.

5.Audio programs these are one of the best ways to learn since this would give you both written and pronounced word and phrases and help you at every step. These audio programs can be used through a regular walkman or portable CD player. You can also tune is to your favorite podcasts and learn Spanish from experts through these broadcasts.

Decide And Start Learning Your New Language!

Published by admin under Language Courses

I want to learn a new language, but I can not motivate myself!

You are not alone. There are thousands of people struggling. But I am here to help.

The first question to ask when you are starting to learn a new language is: WHY Do I want To Learn it?

If you can not get a clear answer on this, then there is not a REAL REASON WHY YOU WANT TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE!

The second thing you need to know is: WHAT LEVEL would you like to reach? Beginner, intermediate, or maybe, advanced? As you guessed, I am trying to help you to know your destination. Unless you know where are you going, there is not a huge opportunity to get there, right?

Once you know why you want to learn the language and at what level, you need to start. And I offer you one great secret which applies not only to learning languages, but in anything in life: KEEP IT SIMPLE!

You would not learn a language in a typical school, that is a fact. People in school often tend to make simple things complicated. They make you think that learning a language is something beyond your limits. It is not.

I have been trying many programs that can help me to learn a language (in my case, German) and the best ones were Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur.

Once you start, obstacles will start to show on your way. But do not give up. Obstacles are a normal thing. You just need to keep going on and on. Once you get the basic stuff, it is much more easier then.

I hope I helped you with your decision to start learning a new language. Good luck!

Learn German at Home - 3 Quick Tips

Published by admin under Language Courses

There are a lot of different resources that you can utilize when learning to speak German at home. Learning a new language is not an easy task for me, but these simple tips helped me out a lot with language courses in the past. Ive learned to speak Spanish fluently enough to converse, read, and even write simple phrases in Spanish with these tips and am now using them to help me learn German.

Tip #1: Watch Movies!

This method is not only simple, its fun, and it can really help develop a foundation. Start watching movies in English that have German subtitles. (Sometimes these are hard to find at U.S. video stores, but you can get almost any movie online) Reading the subtitles while listening to the words in English helps you to better understand conversational German. Also, once you are starting to really be able to understand German, you can start watching movies, spoken in German (or at least dubbed in German), with English subtitles. Try to understand what is being said and use the subtitles only as a guide. This is an excellent way to pick up conversational language without having to visit a foreign country!

Tip #2: Use Flash Cards

Thats right, use this simple technique we were all taught in school! You can use flash cards in two different ways. First of all, you can place a card on objects around the house with the German word for that object. This will help you learn the German words for common things around the house and get others involved. The second thing you can do with flash cards is, put common phrases in German on one side of a card and then the English translation on the other side of the card. Then, speak the phrases in German when ever you have the opportunity.

Tip #3: Read Comic Strips and Childrens Books

I know it may sound silly but by using childrens books you avoid advanced and hard to translate words. Take comic strips, or childrens books that you are familiar with that have been translated into German and practice reading them. These publications will have simple sentence structure and should be fairly short in length. It is also helpful if you have a copy in English so that if you really get in a bind you can translate. Hopefully though, you will know the story well enough to fill in the blanks when you are unsure of a word or phrase. (Again, you can find translated books online fairly easily)

Nothing can replace an actual class, or course in speaking German. But, by using these three tips, you can incorporate learning German at home into your everyday life. This will help you pick up the language more naturally and without hours and hours of studying. You can use these techniques in addition to taking a class or by themselves in your spare time. Just remember, the best way to learn anything is through repetition and by incorporating new things into your everyday life! So, have fun and dont get frustrated. Just keep working and you will get it!

P.S. These tips can be used to help learn any language! So, dont limit yourself just to German. Try Spanish, French, Italian, whatever youre interested in. Also, if you have children around, start using these techniques with them. Children pick up languages very easily, and then you will have partners in your new adventure!

Brief Introduction of Han Yu Pin Yin

Published by admin under Language Courses

The purpose of this manual is to introduce the Pinyin system to beginner learners in Mandarin Chinese. All effort has been made to eliminate unnecessary grammar and instead replaced with an explanation in plain language. The material can be completed in one class and just with a bit of practice most students can master this powerful study tool quickly. In other words, if you follow the method mentioned in this document within a couple of hours you will be able to read any Chinese character marked with Pinyin correctly and also to write a given pronunciation in Pinyin format. You will also be able to check new words in Chinese-English dictionary with the help of Pinyin and make your study easier than ever. As some materials of the manual are from the internet, it is suggested that you use this manual with internet connection. OK, now lets start your very first step of your Chinese study.

Pinyin, also known as Hanyu Pinyin is simply a method to write Chinese pronunciations by using the English alphabet (Roman characters). Pin literally means \”spell\” and yin \”sound\”. The Pinyin system was initially approved by the Chinese government in 1958. And because it is such an effective tool, which is fairly simple and easy to understand, it not only makes it convenient for natives to learn the Chinese language and characters but it also helps non-Chinese speakers to become familiar with and master the standard pronunciations of Mandarin - the National Standard Chinese. Since 1979, Hanyu Pinyin had been widely accepted and adopted by many world class institutes and organizations, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as the standard Romanization for modern Chinese (ISO-7098:1991), the Government of Singapore, the Library of Congress and the American Library Association. Pinyin has also become a useful tool for entering Chinese language text onto computers.

Mr. Li is an experienced Language teacher in Speak College Sydney as well as an educator of an online Chinese language training provider (http://www.mandarinworkshop.net). He is now dedicating most of the time to help English speaker to master modern Chinese. He is specialised in business Chinese education and to help people who wants to catch up the economic booming in China.

Its a good acknowledgement, the way the Spanish language is accepted and used even in bits, by so many people around the world. This simple fact has been happening for many years now which make it even easier for people who never had the chance to speak the language or even understand it.

Maybe learning the Spanish language really depends on how interested a person is. It could also be the fact that there are besides travel reasons, a person wanting to learn the Spanish language. Actually, there could be a lot of reasons that we dont have much room of it in this article. But, the fact that the Spanish words have been included in many movies, cartoon animation, commercials and songs over the years; make it acceptably easy to learn over time.

The one thing which has brought many people to learning Spanish is because there are people almost in every corner of the world speaking it today. If one has lived over a century ago, his Spanish fervor would become slightly strange to the people around. Its this, learning and living in this day and age that makes it even more interesting and classified. We have all the tools that we require in one click, a push of a button which is why, the proper knowledge of a language we attempt to learn should be perfect.

This isnt exactly though. The Spanish language has many twists and turns on its own. A person could be familiar with what he hears, one word at a time; which is a good thing. But there are more to it than expected. Learning Spanish takes time, effort and most of all, the will of a person who wants to study it or even use it. No matter how fast paced this world may seem, languages, not only the Spanish language has prevailed for so many years now which is the only and very reason why learning parts of it just means taking your time to sit down and open a good Spanish learning source.

The Differences Between Translating and Interpreting

Published by admin under Language Courses

Translation companies often hear the request I need a translator! when they answer a clients phone call.

However, when they ask for more information they actually discover that what their client really needs is an interpreter which is quite different to a translator. This is a fairly common and understandable misconception. Translating and interpreting actually involve two completely different skills and are usually not handled by the same person.

A translator works with written text which could consist of anything from the translation of a report or contract to some brochure or advertisement copy which requires translation into their native language. The text could be in any format from Word, Excel, Powerpoint, HTML to PDF or hard copy.

Most translation companies only work with native speaking, in-country translators who only ever translate into their own mother tongue. They are highly qualified and experienced professionals who have a post graduate qualification in translation and several years of experience. It is a skill which requires them to translate from a source language into their own target language in a way that appears natural in their native language whilst avoiding a literal translation. Furthermore, the translator needs to understand the nuances and idioms which might appear in the original source language and translate them into their own target language whilst at the same time keeping the original meaning in tact. They often have previous experience of working in these fields before they decided to embark on a career as a translator. Translation costs are based on the source word count, wherever possible, of the document to be translated and a translator can translate on average 1,500-2,000 words per day.

Translators tend to specialise in certain fields, for example:

Banking, finance and economics, engineering, government and politics, information technology, law, marketing, media and creative, medicine and pharmaceuticals, oil and gas and telecoms.

By contrast an interpreter works with the spoken word as a consecutive or simultaneous interpreter.

A consecutive interpreter will make a note of a speech or lecture and then present the content to the audience in their native language. This type of interpreting is often used for court hearings, GP and Hospital appointments, business meetings and delegate visits. City Councils, the NHS and local police forces rely on this type of interpreting as the number of migrant workers to the UK continues to increase.

A simultaneous interpreter will literally interpret what is being said simultaneously into their native language. Simultaneous interpreters are used mainly at conferences or at the European Parliament and United Nations for example, where the target audience needs to know simultaneously what is being said through the use of headsets. This type of interpreting is very demanding as well as tiring and usually entails a team of two working together to allow each interpreter to have a short break.

Interpreters usually charge by the hour, half day or full day and expect their travel expenses and the cost of any meals during the interpreting time to be paid by the client.

The Chinese Language

Published by admin under Language Courses

For the student wanting to learn Chinese, the first question that comes up is what Chinese dialect should I learn? There are several main regional groups of Chinese. The most populous dialects are Mandarin with approximately 850 million speakers, Wu with 90 million, Min with about 70 million, and Cantonese with 70 million.

Mandarin therefore is the main dialect in China both in numerical terms and as well as being sanctioned as the main language by the Chinese government and therefore of most benefit to the aspiring student. The word Mandarin is a translation from the Beijing expression guan-hu meaning \”official language\” that was the dialect of this city for several centuries. This dialect was accepted as the official language at the beginning of the 20th century. Mandarin is also spoken in Taiwan though differences in syntax and vocabulary do exist.

Wu is spoken in the Zhejiang province, the municipality of Shanghai, southern province of Jiangsu as well as parts of the Anhui, Jiangxi, and Fujian provinces. Min is spoken in the southeastern province of Fujian as well as by migrants from this province to Guangdong, Hainan, three counties in southern Zhejiang, and the Zhoushan archipelago, and Taiwan. In contrast, the areas with the highest concentration of speakers of Cantonese are in Guangdong province, parts of Guanx, in southern mainland China, Hong Kong and Macua. Of the four official languages that are spoken in Singapore, huyu, is based on the dialect of Beijing, though once again differences are present.

Mandarin speakers number about 70 per cent of the total Chinese population and live mainly in the western plains region. This region includes the central Yngzi, the plain of Hui, the neoriental plain, Sichuan and the the provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunan.

The different dialects spoken are normally understood by the different language groups and can be divided as follows: Septentrional, spoken in the northern region and it includes the dialect of Pekn; Noroccidental includes the dialects of the Loess plain and territories to the west; Southoccidental, spoken in Sichuan and the adhacent regions; and Oriental, that represent the dialects spoken in Nanking.

Chinese is a tonal language. The tonal difference is one of the most common variations among the different Chinese dialects. At times it happens that the dialects of two villages separated only by a few kilometers have different tonal systems. For example, the tonal system of the dialect spoken in Pekin is the typical way of speaking in the septentrional region.

In this area Mandarin of Beijing represents one of the simplest Chinese dialects from the point of view of the tonal aspect, having four different tones that indicate the four levels of the words: high, very high, medium and fallen high.

The romanization system officially adopted by the government of Beijing, called pinyin, represents the tones making use of diacritical superimposed signs on the nuclear vocal of the word.
